"Recent evidence for a rapid bounce-back is evaluated in a new review
article by Dr Zhong-Qiang Chen, from the China University of Geosciences
in Wuhan, and Professor Michael Benton from the University of Bristol.
They find that recovery from the crisis lasted some 10 million years, as
explained May 27 in Nature Geoscience.
There were apparently two
reasons for the delay, the sheer intensity of the crisis, and
continuing grim conditions on Earth after the first wave of extinction.
The
end-Permian crisis, by far the most dramatic biological crisis to
affect life on Earth, was triggered by a number of physical
environmental shocks -- global warming, acid rain, ocean
acidification and ocean anoxia. These were enough to kill off 90 per
cent of living things on land and in the sea.
Dr Chen said:
"It is hard to imagine how so much of life could have been killed, but
there is no doubt from some of the fantastic rock sections in China and
elsewhere round the world that this was the biggest crisis ever faced by
life."

Early man was a vegetarian. Apparently grazed on grasses with Zebras, Pigs and Hippos.
Hmm, so early man was a vegetarian after all.
For decades, a 2.3 million- to 1.2 million-year-old human relative named Paranthropus boisei has been nicknamed Nutcracker Man because of his big, flat molar teeth and thick, powerful jaw. But a definitive new University of Utah study shows that Nutcracker Man didn't eat nuts, but instead chewed grasses and possibly sedges -- a discovery that upsets conventional wisdom about early humanity's diet.
Study co-author Kevin Uno, a University of Utah Ph.D. student in geology, adds: "This study provides evidence that Paranthropus boisei was not cracking nuts, but was instead eating mainly tropical grasses or sedges. It was not competing for food with most other primates, who ate fruits, leaves and nuts; but with grazers -- zebras' ancestors, suids [ancestors of pigs and warthogs] and hippos."

Russia to make first floating "Noah's Ark" - Ark Hotel 10k people in a self-sustaining biosphere, invest your $$$ in fear!
This giant floating steel-and-glass-vertical-doughnut hotel, claiming to offer a self-sustained environment, its lower half immersed in water and its upper half afloat, is nothing if not intriguing.
Designed to withstand floods caused by rising sea levels, The Ark Hotel has been envisioned as a safe, self-contained ‘biosphere’ – a haven in the case of disaster.
Sounds very inspired by the Noah’s Ark concept huh ?
With its design concept deeply entrenched in “green design”, the Ark Hotel attempts at being self-sustaining at as many levels as possible.
The building uses solar panels and a rainwater collection system to provide inhabitants with power and water, while the greenhouse-like environment created by lush vegetation helps with air quality and also provides food sources.

The Ion Drive - Get to Mars within 5 hours!!! Is this the future of space propulsion?
What do you know about these?

"Basically, take an atom and zap it to remove it's electron. Then the atom has a positive charge. Use a positive electric field to fire the atom out the back (positive charges repel each other). Since it is a little atom, you can fire it at a VERY VERY high speed.
It is like propelling your car by shooting BBs out the back. Basically, it takes a long time to get up to speed, but it much more efficient since you can shoot those BBs out at close to light speed. For the same mass of propellant, you end up going a lot further and faster(EVENTUALLY!).
Think of it this way. If you have 100 pounds of propellant and shoot it all out the back at 50,000 mph and have used it up in a few minutes (like a rocket) vs. taking that 100 pounds and shooting it out at the speed of light (though it takes you a month to shoot it all out) then you've imparted a lot more thrust overall at the end of a month.
If you wanted to go faster at the start, you need a whole mess of BB shooters going all at once. So in order to get to Mars fast, you need to design something that can shoot out more than 1 BB at a time. If you could, for example, take that 100 lbs and shoot it all out the back at the speed of light in a few minutes, you'll be really haulin'.
Current ION thrusters only shoot a few atoms out at a time, so they have been used on long missions that are weight constrained and so can't carry lots of fuel. NASA's Deep Space 1 probe (launched in 1998) was the first to test out using one.
NASA's DAWN probe that is about to reach the asteroid Vesta also uses ION engines.
[link to www.space.com]
So, the hope is that now that ion engines have been proven, that they can make much bigger ones (or hundreds/thousands of them) on a ship. We have a long way to go still, so some ideas are to use ion engines for delivering cargo/supplies and old fashioned rockets for people."

Edit to update:
Apparently, according to the scientists on the show, they said 39 days so more like 6 weeks.
It assumes an ion drive has a nuclear power plant on board for all the power needed.
The ion engine design is assumed to be the VASIMR drive, which uses superconducting magnets to generate powerful magnetic fields to accelerate the ions. Someone mentioned this VASIMR drive earlier in the thread:
Here is a nice article on it->

Are we in a matrix computer program?! Is December 21st 2012 The Singularity when humans become self aware of our holographic universe?!
This is it folks, a strange computer code was JUST discovered concealed in Superstring Equations!

So what does it mean?
Remember when Terence McKenna said with his Timewave Zero theory that the point goes off the chart and ends at exactly December 21st, 2012, same with the Mayan Calendar and I-Ching?
If not reference this video first:
He proposed that it is possibly when man invents time-travel or we enter another dimensional state of awareness permanently.
Now a Doubly-even self-dual linear binary error-correcting block code," first invented by Claude Shannon in the 1940's, has been discovered embedded WITHIN the equations of superstring theory!!!

THIS VIDEO IS INSANE!
So as we are on the cusp of figuring out our lives are just a simulation, Dec 21 2012 is coming soon!
Perhaps that was designed to be the end of our simulation, as it nearly coincides with us in our simulation becoming aware that this is a simulation.

The catch is that if we are being simulated, the simulating world isn't "material" either. Quantum info theory shows us that qubits can never be simulated by classical bits, meaning that the "next world" up top would be constructed from quantum info as well.
Quantum info is pure info however, and is non-local, and hence, immaterial. Penrose further showed this info to be Platonic -ideas in essence.
Meaning oddly enough that the "real" world may be in something like a Mind.

So what mind are we all just a dream from???
Godel's theorem is established mathematics. It has nothing to do with just finding a numerical code in nature.
Which means we have to dispense with the philosophic basis on which science rests, and thus we have to dispense with science itself, and all of your arguments which you think are scientific. Meaning you've just self-detonated your own position.
Yes it does. The Penrose-Lucas theorem showed that for Godel's theorem to be true Platonic forms must exist.
Check out this recent full episode on the BBC of the possibility of Parallel Universes/M-Theory, it all ties in with this as well:
When you end within the simulation as it is presented now, you would just transfer into a different simulation or "program" so to speak. Since energy cannot be destroyed only transferred to a different form.
Would you retain any of your consciousness, thoughts, and things you have learned while in this program? I guess that is the age old question...
Now when the simulation itself ends, that may be entirely up to the grand programmer.
Dreams are the minds way of "rebooting" and learning while placing the human consciousness in different dream scenarios, that WE create. A natural backup in case our physical shell ceases to exist.
So what does it mean?

Bosco Verticale - The Forest in the Sky
This is amazing, hope this catches on worldwide! Con molto rispetto!!
"The Bosco Verticale is a system that optimizes, recuperates, and produces energy. Covered in plant life, the building aids in balancing the microclimate and in filtering the dust particles contained in the urban environment (Milan is one of the most polluted cities in Europe). The diversity of the plants and their characteristics produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust particles, producing oxygen and protect the building from radiation and acoustic pollution. This not only improves the quality of living spaces, but gives way to dramatic energy savings year round.
Each apartment in the building will have a balcony planted with trees that are able to respond to the city’s weather — shade will be provided within the summer, while also filtering city pollution; and in the winter the bare trees will allow sunlight to permeate through the spaces. Plant irrigation will be supported through the filtering and reuse of the greywater produced by the building. Additionally, Aeolian and photovoltaic energy systems will further promote the tower’s self-sufficiency."
http://inhabitat.com/bosco-verticale-in-milan-will-be-the-worlds-first-vertical-forest/
"Safety is also a major factor and Brunello explained: 'If a tree was blown down in the wind from a great height this could be a huge problem.
'So we tested various trees in a wind turbine to make sure we had the right ones.'
When the sky forest is completed by the end of 2012 the structure will house the same amount of residents as 50,000 square meters of conventional urban sprawl.
The towers will not only be home to human residents but to the insects, birds and animals that usually live in the parks of Milan.
The towers, which are still under construction, are the brainchild of world renowned Milan architect, 55 year-old Stefano Boeri."

Great white sharks prefer AC/DC
Pretty awesome.
A cage-diving operator in South Australia has discovered that great white sharks in that region are fans of rock-and-roll music -- specifically that produced by the legendary Australian band AC/DC.
Matt Waller of Adventure Bay Charters began experimenting with music played through underwater speakers, as other cage-diving operators in other regions have, as a means of luring sharks to divers in cages without using chummed fish parts, which is increasingly controversial.
Sharks are sensitive to vibrations and have long been known to be able to hone in on the source of the noise from great distances. (Pacific Islanders used to rub coconuts together underwater to attract certain species of sharks.)

One of the creepiest things to me, ever.
ROBOROACHES
Are WE ROBOROACHES to TPTB???
Students Prepare to Control Roaches With Remote-Control Brains
Way more interesting than when we dissected worms, frogs, and sheeps brains in high school. What else have people here dissected?
With nanotechnology they are basically hooking an electric backpack that you can jam into the cockroachs brain. You then turn the bug into a kind of organic/cybernetic remote-controlled car.
"Roboroaches are the latest in creepy high school science experiments. That's the idea behind Roboroach, a product being developed by Backyard Brains, a company trying to find new and inexpensive ways to get practical neuroscience equipment into high school classrooms."
